Within just two days of opening, exhibitors at the 140th China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair) experienced an unexpected surge in demand, leaving floor samples sold out and factories facing urgent replenishment pressures.
As the traditional barometer of China’s foreign trade, the 140th Canton Fair opened on October 15. On-site observations revealed a distinct shift in buyer behavior: international clients are no longer merely browsing, but actively placing immediate orders and finalizing large-scale transactions on the spot.
Official data released by the China Foreign Trade Centre shows that the first phase of the exhibition, which concluded on October 19, attracted 189,000 overseas buyers from 214 countries and regions. This represents a 13.3% increase compared to the same period in the previous session, marking a historical high in attendance and showcasing the resilience of China’s foreign trade sector.
Smart Wearables and Niche Robotics Become Instant Hits
Innovative consumer electronics emerged as major drivers of event traffic. Shenzhen Kim Dai Intelligent. introduced a smart ring capable of real-time monitoring of sleep, heart rate, blood pressure, and blood oxygen levels via a paired mobile application. Priced competitively at 200 yuan (approx. $28 USD), all 2,000 sample units were snapped up by the second day.
By the end of Phase 1, the company secured orders from 30 buyers, primarily from Europe and Latin America. CEO Wang Maolin noted that initial orders averaged 1,000 units per buyer, with follow-up orders contingent on market response.
In the service robotics zone, Shanxi Jiashida Robot Technology Co., Ltd. featured its window-cleaning robots, a specialized product line the company has refined over 14 years through seven generational upgrades. Chairman Niu Liqun reported that export sales to European and American markets grew 180% year-on-year in the first nine months of 2026, maintaining an annual growth rate of 50% to 60% over the past three years. By October 21, all 200 demonstration units on-site were sold, and negotiations are underway with a European buyer for an annual intent order of 100,000 units.
Similarly, Shenzhen Gamsing Technology Co., Ltd., a developer of third-generation AI-integrated smart musical instruments, expanded its footprint from one booth at the previous fair to five. Founder and CEO Ling Xiaojun disclosed that within the first two days, the company's retail sales and B2B intent orders exceeded 10 million yuan, surpassing its total sales revenue for the entire previous year. Market research projects that the global smart musical instrument market will exceed $8.72 billion in 2026.

Structural Shift: From Contract Manufacturing to Technology Export
The rapid transaction pace highlights a broader structural transformation in China’s export economy. Experienced attendees noted that the exhibition has evolved from a low-cost contract manufacturing showcase into a hub for original design, proprietary technology, and global branding.
Ma Xianbin, Public Relations Director at Ecovacs, noted that two decades ago, Chinese exhibitors relied heavily on Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) orders, operating passively under buyer-specified standards and pricing. Today, domestic enterprises drive product development. Ecovacs, supported by a local network of over 800 supply chain partners, currently holds a 61% global market share in robotic lawn mowers.
Long Hao, Secretary-General of Canton Chamber of Commerce in New Zealand Incorporated, echoed this sentiment based on two decades of observation. In earlier years, international buyers prioritized price and production capacity over technical sophistication. Today, the Canton Fair operates as a global innovation hub where overseas clients increasingly rely on Chinese technological advancements and proprietary product solutions.
