In a landmark transaction that signals a definitive shift in the global gaming landscape, Savvy Games Group—wholly owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF)—has reached a definitive agreement to acquire 100% of Moonton Technology from ByteDance for a staggering sum exceeding $6 billion.
This deal not only sets a record for equity transactions involving Chinese gaming firms in recent years but also marks the formal conclusion of ByteDance’s six-year "gaming dream" as the tech giant pivots its strategic focus toward Artificial Intelligence.
The acquisition represents a high-yield exit for ByteDance, which originally purchased Moonton in 2021 for approximately $4 billion. At that time, ByteDance sought to leverage the massive traffic of Douyin and TikTok to challenge the duopoly of Tencent and NetEase.
However, the inherent friction between ByteDance’s traffic-driven internet logic and the long-cycle, high-risk nature of hardcore game development proved difficult to reconcile. As the group’s internal priorities shifted toward generative AI, the decision to divest its core gaming assets became a pragmatic move to recoup capital and streamline operations.
For Moonton, the developer behind Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB), the transition to Savvy Games Group offers a stable, long-term growth environment. Savvy is the primary vehicle for Saudi Arabia’s "Vision 2030."
With a mandate to transform the Kingdom into a global gaming and esports hub, Savvy views Moonton as a vital anchor in the Asian market—a region where Saudi capital has previously had a limited footprint despite the area's massive user base and mature monetization models.
Industry analysts observe that this $6 billion divestiture reflects a structural transformation in global capital flows.
The "Middle Eastern Capital + Chinese R&D + Global Distribution" model is emerging as a potent new paradigm. While Chinese internet titans are retreating from capital-intensive gaming ventures to bet on AI, high-value developers with proven international IPs are becoming scarce, premium assets for sovereign wealth funds.
Under the new ownership, Moonton’s core management team, led by Zhang Yunfan, will remain at the helm to ensure operational continuity. Backed by Savvy’s immense financial reserves, Moonton is poised to expand its product matrix and explore new frontiers in PC and console gaming.
