On May 8th, China Film Co., Ltd. disclosed at its 2022 annual performance conference that the company is planning to build a sci-fi film park featuring fantasy, adventure and interaction at Beijing's Huairou district based on a series of sci-fi film IPs, adjacent to the State Production Base of China Film Group.
China Film closed at 18.28 yuan on May 9th, up 9.99%.
"Although we haven't had a Chinese film-themed park yet, some movies have brought tourism booms to some cities. For example, 'If You Are the One' caused a travel fever to Hainan. Films such as 'The Cliff Above,' 'Hi, Mom,' and 'Full River Red' produced by China Film have made Harbin, Xiangyang, and Taiyuan Ancient County popular tourist attractions," said Fu Ruoqing, the chairman of China Film.
It is worth noting that the "The Wandering Earth" film series, adapted from Liu Cixin's works, directed by Guo Fan, and mainly produced by China Film, is considered as one of China's sci-fi flagship productions. "The Wandering Earth 2", which broke 32 records on its first day of release, became the highest-rated sci-fi film in China and entered the top ten in Chinese film history by box office with over 4 billion yuan in total box office sales.
While making big profits from ticket sales, "The Wandering Earth 2" IP derivatives were also extremely popular. The crowdfunding for the IP derivatives exceeded one billion yuan in eight days, breaking the record in the niche segment in China. Fu Ruoqing stated that the combined sales of "DIY model kits" for "The Wandering Earth 2" have exceeded 300,000 sets.
According to financial reports, China Film achieved revenue of RMB2.92 billion in 2022, showing a year-on-year decrease of 49.79%; the net loss attributable to shareholders of the parent company was RMB215 million, representing a year-on-year decrease of 190.92%.
The first-quarter report of 2023 showed China Film achieved revenue of RMB1.445 billion, delivering a year-on-year increase of 52.71%; the net profit attributable to shareholders of the parent company was RMB182 million, showing a year-on-year increase of 56.89%.
As of May 6th, according to the latest disclosure from the earnings conference, China Film has nearly 60 projects in development, including nearly 40 original works. In 2023, 19 films such as "The Wandering Earth 2", "Full River Red", and "Born to Fly" have been released, and 12 films are planned for release.
In addition, when asked about the application of artificial intelligence, Fu Ruoqing stated that China Film is paying attention to and closely following the new trends in technology development and promoting future technological innovation in Chinese films. "The iteration of AI is too fast. It has already gone from text to pictures, then from static pictures to dynamic pictures. If AI absorbs and digests all static pictures, dynamic pictures, and text, it will present another state," said Fu.
