Feb. 25 (NBD) -- WeChat Pay Hong Kong of Tencent Holdings (0700.HK) has gained approval to start Hong Kong-Macao cross-boundary mobile payments services, The Beijing News reported Monday.
By March this year, Hong Kong shoppers will be able to make payments using WeChat Pay HK in Macao.
Tencent is one of the first licensed operators in Hong Kong which allow local users to settle their purchases on the mainland via a Hong Kong mobile payment wallet.
It's noticed that WeChat Pay HK rolled out cross-boundary payment function in mainland China in late 2018. Such services are now being updated and extended to Hong Kong and Macao, said Tencent Financial Technology, adding that it will also promote the use of WeChat Pay HK among Macao residents when traveling or working in Hong Kong.
"We are happy to join hands with financial institutions in Macao and will continue to explore opportunities with others in the future so as to provide high-quality digital payment services for Hong Kong and Macao residents," said Chen Qiru, vice-president of Tencent Financial Technology.
