Dec. 25 (NBD) -- Beijing had built a total of 16,634 5G base stations as of December 16 this year, of which 14,577 had already been put into operation, the municipal telecom authorities said Wednesday.

The 5G network is capable of covering all the outdoor areas within the fifth ring road of Beijing, and for the areas beyond, targeted coverage is achieved.

The number of 5G users in the capital has hit 251,000. Moreover, Beijing is expected to have 40,000 5G base stations at the end of 2020.

National Business Daily noticed China has been accelerating 5G deployment and striving towards full coverage. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology ("MIIT") said on Monday that the country has put 126,000 5G base stations into services nationwide.

China will step up infrastructure development of 5G next year, and all the country's prefecture-level cities are expected to be covered by 5G networks by the end of 2020, according to the MIIT.
