June 25 (NBD) -- Beijing Electric Vehicle Co., Ltd. (BJEV), subsidiary of Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co Ltd, regained the first spot in May in terms of monthly sale volume of new energy passenger vehicles since BJEV saw a sharp decline in sales in February.

According to data from the China Passenger Car Association, China posted new energy passenger vehicle sales of 92,188 units in May, a year-over-year rise of 142 percent.

BJEV reported sales of 19,632 units in May, surging 201 percent year on year. BYD (002594.SZ), which ranked second in terms of new energy passenger vehicle sales, delivered 13,453 units last month with a year-on-year increase of 54 percent.

BJEV's high sales volume was largely contributed by EC and EX series models. The delivery of EC models in May registered 12,624 units, jumping 224 percent compared with the same month a year earlier.

However, BJEV was reported to have discontinued production and sale of two EC models, the EC 180 and EC 200, and dealers of the electric vehicle manufacturer were allegedly required to clear the inventory of these two models by the end of May.

NBD learned BJEV's move was caused by the subsidy cut for new-energy vehicles. Moreover, the halt of sales and production of EC models had raised concerns over possible sales decline in June.
