More than 20,000 Japanese enterprises have invested in China, an official said Tuesday.

Since the normalization of China-Japan relations 45 years ago, economic and trade cooperation between the two countries has developed greatly, said Zhang Wei, vice president of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT).

Zhang made the remarks at a Sino-Japanese industrial cooperation forum held in Beijing Tuesday.

The two countries have established a complementary and mutually beneficial partnership and become major trade partners, he said.

China has become an important overseas market, investment destination and source of overseas profit for Japan, he added.

Zhang said that the two countries, which are at different stages of economic development, are economically complementarity and enjoy promising prospects of cooperation between industries and businesses in fields such as intelligent manufacturing, energy and environmental protection.

Customs data showed that Sino-Japanese bilateral trade volume peaked at 340 billion U.S. dollars and hovered around 270 billion U.S. dollars in the past two years.
