Beijing's transport administration has urgently put the brakes on an electric bike-share program, reiterating that bikes without license plates cannot run on the city's roads, Beijing Morning Post reported.

Fifty electric bikes were parked near subway stations inside Beijing's 5th Ring Road since Feb. 14 by Meichemei Consultancy.

After downloading the company's app and depositing 299 yuan (43.55 US dollars), riders could use the electric bikes without any official authentication. None of the bikes had license plates issued by the transport administration.

There have also been reports of electric bike-share users speeding, driving recklessly and increasing traffic chaos.

Beijing's transport administration has removed all of the shared electric bikes, the report said.
