The Chengdu-Chongqing international comprehensive transport hub will be built, according to China's five-year plan on the development of modern transport system.

It is one of the four international hubs planned by the country and also the only hub of such kind in central and west China. The three other international hubs are Beijing-Tianjin, Shanghai, and Guangzhou-Shenzhen centers.

This moves Chengdu's position up a notch in the country's comprehensive transport network.

China's transport system plan for the 2016-2020 period shows that four out of the ten vertical and horizontal transport routes planned will pass through Chengdu.

Meanwhile, the southwestern city will create an airline network with more than 110 international routes through the construction of the new Tianfu International Airport and expansion of the existing Shuangliu International Airport.

In terms of railway development, Chengdu is building international and regional railway hubs, with Chengdu-Kunming high-speed rail, Chengdu-Xining rail line, and Chengdu-Golmud rail line being planned.
