In a surprising announcement at the opening night of Gamescom 2025, Game Science, the studio behind the hit game Black Myth: Wukong, revealed its next project: Black Myth: Zhong Kui.
A New Direction for Game Science
Following the successful launch of Black Myth: Wukong on August 20, 2024, the game quickly became a top seller on platforms like Steam and PlayStation 5, dominating social media. Game Science founder and CEO Feng Ji explained the decision to create a new title rather than focusing on a DLC for Wukong.
According to a post on the studio's official website, they felt a strong desire to "lightly and cautiously try some more differentiated gaming experiences, tinker with a few more challenging game features, and introduce something new in terms of worldview and narrative." Zhong Kui was a "natural choice," offering the opportunity for a "fresh change and innovation" while allowing them to reflect on and address past shortcomings.
About the New Game
Game Science also released a teaser trailer for Black Myth: Zhong Kui on August 20. The studio clarified that the game's release date is "yet to be determined" and that the project "has only just had its folder created," with no actual gameplay footage ready. They chose to release the CG short film to announce that the new project has officially entered development.

While a significant departure from the Wukong storyline, the studio confirmed that Black Myth: Zhong Kui will share several key similarities with its predecessor:
It will draw from ancient Chinese mythology and folk legends.
It will be a single-player action RPG.
The business model will remain the same.
In his post, Feng Ji assured fans, "The legend of Wukong will come back in the future in a more complete and solid way, once it's ready."
The announcement quickly became a trending topic, with #BlackMythZhongkui trending on social media.
