Jan. 9 (NBD) -- Alibaba-owned mapping services provider AMAP is turning its eyes to overseas markets after upgrading its platform for more integrated mobility offerings.

The leading mobility service platform on Wednesday announced a partnership with the Netherlands-based HERE Technologies to collaborate on overseas mapping and location-based services.

Under the partnership, AMAP will leverage HERE's global mapping data and traffic information outside of China to provide navigation, location and other mobility services to its users.

The company's overseas mobility services will be ready for use in 2020, expected to be first launched in selected east and southeast Asian countries.

National Business Daily noticed that Baidu Maps is actually a step ahead of AMAP in tapping into overseas mapping markets. The mapping application delivered a remarkable performance in the outbound tourism market during the National Day holiday of 2019. Data shows that Baidu Maps covered 98 percent of overseas points of interest and was the travel companion of choice for 50 percent of Chinese people traveling abroad at the time.
