July 4 (NBD) -- Baidu is to partner with Huawei in tapping deeper into the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, the Chinese search engine giant's chief technology officer Wang Haifeng announced on Wednesday.

At the annual AI developers conference Baidu Create 2019, Wang said that his company's open source deep-learning platform PaddlePaddle will cooperate with Huawei Kirin to create a learning platform based on domestically developed chipsets.

National Business Daily (NBD) noticed that Baidu unveiled an AI chip dubbed "Honghu", which will be applied in vehicle-mounted voice systems and other domains alike. The tech giant has been making efforts to create its own chipsets after it launched its first AI chip "Kunlun" last year, and the tie-up with Huawei is regarded by industry insiders as a powerful combination for achieving that goal.

It's noticed that Baidu's AI platform opens 210 related technologies and boasts 1.3 million developers, while Huawei's Kirin is the world's leading chipset platform.

Wang Chenglu, president of Huawei Consumer Business Group software division, said that the two companies will jointly provide strong computing power for AI development, improve the operation efficiency of deep learning, and create more AI applications.

NBD observed that Baidu and Huawei have forged cooperation for a long time. In 2017, these two parties signed a strategic cooperation agreement to join efforts in Internet services, content ecology as well as AI platform and technology.
