China's southeast coastal areas, including the Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta areas, will be banned from building thermal power plants.

Li Yizhong, a member of the national committee of CPPCC and former head of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, made the remarks in a recent interview with NBD.

In addition to overcapacity, the thermal power industry faces challenges from industrial pattern and structure.

Electric power will be transferred from West and Central China to guarantee power supply in the southeast coastal areas.

This is not only helpful to create a reasonable layout nationwide, but can reduce curtailment of wind power, water, and photovoltaic energy in West and Central China, Li said.
