At the 2025 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, held from January 7th to 10th, multiple TV manufacturers showcased their MiniLED products.
Thanks to the decreasing cost of backlighting and active brand involvement, the penetration rate of MiniLED TVs in China significantly increased in 2024. TCL, a leading TV brand, is poised to further advance its big screen strategy in the North American market.
According to data from AVC, a market research firm, the retail share of MiniLED TVs in China reached 17.2% from January to November 2024, a substantial increase of 14.2 percentage points compared to the whole of 2023.
During CES 2025, deputy general manager of TCL Industrial Pan-Smart Screen BU, Zuo Bo, revealed to National Business Daily (NBD) that TCL's MiniLED TV sales saw significant growth globally in 2024, with overseas sales up by 145% in the first three quarters of the year. He emphasized the synergistic relationship between big screens and MiniLED technology, stating that larger screens require MiniLED to support better picture quality.
TCL currently ranks second in the US TV market share. Zuo Bo disclosed that the company will continue to push its big screen strategy in North America. NBD's visit to Best Buy stores in Las Vegas found that TCL's MiniLED TVs offer picture quality close to that of OLED displays, but at a price point approximately half that of OLED TVs from brands like LG and Samsung.
MiniLED and OLED are both emerging display technologies in the TV sector. However, OLED has struggled to become mainstream for large screen TVs due to high costs and low yields. In contrast, MiniLED has been gaining traction in the large screen TV market in recent years, with its penetration rate continuously rising.
TrendForce data indicates that China's appliance trade-in subsidies for 2024 boosted sales of large MiniLED TVs, increasing brand shipments to 6.75 million units, a year-on-year growth of 65%.
Zuo Bo explained that while the big screen TV market in North America lags behind China, TCL is working with local retailers like Best Buy, Costco, and Walmart to enhance consumers' viewing experience. In 2024, TCL invested in transforming hundreds of retail stores to showcase its large screen and QD-MiniLED high-quality display technology, which, combined with high-quality North American content, significantly impacted consumers and drove the market's growth in large-sized TVs.
TCL's TV shipments in North America for 75 inches and above increased by 72.6% in the first three quarters of 2024, with a global shipment volume of 20.01 million units and a market share of 13.6%, firmly placing it in the top two globally. Zuo Bo expressed confidence that this growth will continue, as TCL has gained recognition from users and channels for its focus on large sizes and QD-MiniLED technology.
