Recent evidences show that Tencent's all-purpose app WeChat is trialing food delivery services via its mini programs.
In response, a related person-in-charge at Tencent said that WeChat is testing a mini program called "store delivery" in Guangzhou and Shenzhen. The service is designed to help consumers in the two areas find quality mini programs offering delivery services nearby.
An insider with Tencent underscored that this doesn't mean it is offering food delivery services itself, but is offering an interface for stores with the ability to deliver food to consumers. The food delivery will be eventually undertaken by merchants' mini programs.
In the trial, the first batch of items available include food, tea drinks, fresh products and groceries. Merchants entering the platform are mostly chain brands and emerging Internet companies, all of which have brick-and-mortar stores or preposition warehouses.
According to media reports, at the WeChat Open Class 2023, WeChat disclosed that nearly 60% of the top 100 catering chains nationwide have launched mini program-based food delivery services.
In addition to WeChat, Douyin was previously rumored to be entering the niche market, with the food delivery service to be launched across the country on March 1.
However, an insider with Douyin denied the above-mentioned report.
A person in charge of life services at Douyin told National Business Daily on February 7 that the group buying and delivery service is being tested in Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu, and will be extended to more cities gradually.
