Dec. 18 (NBD) -- Synopsys (NASDAQ: SNPS), a world leader in electronic design automation (EDA) software for semiconductor design, on Wednesday announced the inauguration of its global R&D center in Wuhan, central China's Hubei province. 

Situated at Wuhan East Lake High-Tech Development Zone, the center is Synopsys' first top-level R&D center outside the U.S., and boasts advanced R&D technology platform, management system and talent training mechanism. 

With the opening of the center, the tech behemoth's R&D team in Wuhan is expected to expand to more than 500 people. In terms of product development, Dr. Chi-Foon Chan, president and co-CEO of Synopsys, said the global R&D center will focus on Electronic Design Automation (EDA), intellectual property cores and software security. 

Synopsys was founded in Silicon Valley in 1986, and its partners include Qualcomm, IBM and other leading companies.

The company entered the Chinese market in 1995. So far, it has built a presence in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Xiamen, Wuhan, Xi'an, Nanjing, Hong Kong, and Macao.
