CHENGDU, Feb. 16 (NBD) -- Customs officials or border guards in many Southeast Asian countries mainly charge Chinese tourists tips for exit and entry, said Liu Simin, deputy secretary-general of the tourism branch of the China Society for Futures Studies.
His statement comes after the claims of a Chinese tourist that he was beaten by Vietnamese border officers for refusing to offer a tip.
The victim's experience was not an isolated case, and was echoed by many Chinese people, a survey finds.
A tour guide working in Vietnam confirmed this, saying that many customs officials are indeed charging tips despite the ban.
The survey reveals that Vietnam was deeply affected by western countries, and that people in the country usually expect tips when offering services.
In response, Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFC) said in an e-mail to CCTV reporters that it will deal with the case upon investigation results.
