CHENGDU, Jan. 17 (NBD) -- China aims to become a "well-off society" by 2020, with the country's western regions expected to reach a new level in terms of economic strength, quality of people's life, and ecological environment, according to the new five-year plan for the strategy of developing the western region, which was recently approved by the State Council. 

The plan sets forth ten major tasks: building a new pattern for regional development; reinforcing ecological environment protection; increasing public service supply; enhancing poverty alleviation efforts; promoting innovation-driven development; insisting on opening; accelerating infrastructure construction; building modern industrial systems; developing modern agriculture system; and boosting the development of new urbanization.
