Zhang Nan, CEO of Douyin Group, announced on Wednesday that she is stepping down from her position to focus on the development of CapCut, a video editing app developed by ByteDance.

Zhang Nan joined ByteDance in 2014 and was one of the founding members of the Douyin team. She led the team from its inception in 2016 to its current position as one of the most popular short video platforms in China. In 2020, she was appointed CEO of Douyin Group.

In a statement, Zhang Nan said that she is leaving Douyin Group to pursue her passion for entrepreneurship. She plans to focus on CapCut, which she believes has the potential to become a global leader in video editing.

“I have always been a firm believer in the power of technology to change the world,” Zhang Nan said. “CapCut is a product that has the potential to revolutionize the way people create and share videos. I am excited to join the team and help them achieve their vision.”

According to sources close to CapCut, Zhang Nan has been focusing most of her energy on CapCut-related businesses in the past year. She has also personally led the team in seeking breakthroughs in AI-assisted creation, and is about to launch a product that uses AI to generate images and videos. According to public information, CapCut-related products have been developing rapidly in the past three years. As of 2021, CapCut's monthly active users have exceeded 100 million, making it the largest mobile video editing product in China.

Zhang Nan said in her Wechat post that 2024 marks her 10th year at the company. She expressed her hope that in the next decade, she will be able to do something new and exciting again and grow with her partners in this era of AI.
