The two-day first Global Blockchain Conference (GBCC) was convened at the Chengdu Century City New International Convention & Exhibition Center on June 14-15, 2017.

Themed "Driving Innovation & Linking to the Future," the event saw the attendance of experts from Tencent, Huawei, Deloitte, Microsoft, IBM and some other global leading companies, as well as industry experts and young entrepreneurs. They shared views on the global trend and innovative application of blockchain, and the opportunities and challenges brought about by the new economy within the context of blockchain technology.

A blockchain is a distributed database that can record transactions between two parties efficiently and in a verifiable and permanent way. It is believed by scientists to have the potential to trigger the world's fifth subversive technology revolution, following those involving the steam engine, electricity, information and Internet technologies.

At the conference, the Tianfu Software Park, BTC123, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), Zlinepay and Richland Equities declared to launch an alliance for blockchain innovation and development, which aims to make Chengdu a R&D center of the technology in China within the next three to five years.

"As a leading information hub in China, Chengdu boasts favorable national sci-tech policies, with strong brain support from a large number of universities, among which UESTC has offered academic programs involving the blockchain technology that can be applied to the energy sector since Sichuan abounds in such resources," said Huang Qi, dean of the School of Energy Science and Engineering, UESTC, who feels highly optimistic about Chengdu's development in the blockchain technology.
